Nippon Steel Corp. plans to have its subsidiary United States Steel Corp. start producing high-quality steel sheets of a kind which it currently manufactures only in Japan, company Vice Chairman Takahiro Mori said Thursday.

The Japanese steelmaker expects the effort to spur growth for both Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel, as demand for high-quality steel sheets is rising in America.

Mori played a central role in Nippon Steel's negotiations to buy the American firm, which became a wholly owned subsidiary in June. "We've finally achieved our long-held goal of acquiring (U.S. Steel)," he said at a lecture meeting held in Tokyo.

Mori explained that demand for high value-added steel products is increasing in the United States, but the country has poor domestic production capacity. "If we have U.S. Steel produce (these high-quality steel sheets), it will create growth opportunities," he said.

In particular, Nippon Steel is considering having U.S. Steel produce high-quality steel sheets to be used in making electrical transformers, Mori said.

Mori also referred to U.S. tariff policies under the administration of President Donald Trump. He cited the possibility that cheap steel products that had previously been exported to the United States might flow into Asia and other markets since the country hiked its tariff on steel products to 50%. "The impact of these tariffs will be immeasurably vast," he said.
