The probe of 286,000 General Motors Company (GM) vehicles by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is being expanded to an engineering analysis due to continued reports of engine failures, Reuters reported Monday citing the safety regulator.

NHTSA reportedly said that the problem is coming from engine bearing failures in GM's L87 6.2-litre engine installed in models such as the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Cadillac Escalade.

The regulator began a preliminary investigation in January that led to a recall, according to the report.

GM did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment on the matter.
