Market Chatter: Philippines, UAE Seek CPTPP Membership

The Philippines and the UAE have applied to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the Nikkei Asia reported Monday, citing Japanese government sources.

Both countries submitted their applications in August to New Zealand, the pact's administrative hub, the report said.

The CPTPP, which aims to eliminate tariffs and align trade rules, comprises 12 members, such as Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and the UK. The Philippines seeks deeper trade integration to boost growth amid rising global protectionism, while the UAE aims to diversify its economy beyond oil, the news outlet reported.

Both countries will need unanimous approval from existing members before accession talks can begin, the Nikkei said.
