Dole posted a smaller profit despite an uptick in revenue in the third quarter.

The Dublin-based agricultural company on Monday posted a profit of $5.1 million, or 5 cents a share, compared with $14.4 million, or 15 cents a share, a year earlier. It attributed the decrease in net income largely to a loss of $10.2 million stemming from the discontinued operations of its fresh vegetables business.

Stripping out one-time items, earnings were 16 cents a share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected adjusted earnings of 17 cents a share.

Revenue climbed 11% to $2.28 billion and topped the $2.14 billion that Wall Street modeled.

Executive Chairman Carl McCann said strong results from the company's fresh produce segments were partially offset by an anticipated decline in fresh fruit. The company noted proceeds from the sale of its fresh vegetables division helped to pay down debt.

Dole said it now expects to hit the high end of its full-year adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization outlook of $380 million to $390 million.

At the same time, the company said its board authorized a $100 million share repurchase program.

Shares rose 3.1% to $13.55 in premarket trading.
