Panasonic Energy Co., a battery subsidiary of Japan's Panasonic Holdings Corp., on Tuesday announced that it will supply cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells to the Amazon-owned ride-hailing company Zoox Inc. for its robotaxi services as early as the start of January.

Panasonic Energy hopes to widely showcase its batteries' performance, such as high-level safety, by supplying to a cutting-edge mobility solution.

Zoox is a tech startup cofounded in 2014 by an engineer who graduated from Stanford University; Amazon acquired the company in 2020. In June, Zoox opened a mass production factory for robo-taxis in Hayward, Calif., and launched a robotaxi service in Las Vegas three months later.

Panasonic Energy is a major supplier of electric car batteries, supplying Tesla Inc. and major U.S. commercial EV company Harbinger Motors Inc. It plans to supply the latest version of its 2170 cylindrical battery cells, which have high energy density and superior level of safety, to Zoox.

According to Panasonic Energy, initial supplies will be exported from Japan. However, in the future, the company plans to also produce the batteries at the company's plant in Kansas.

Kazuo Tadanobu, president and CEO of Panasonic Energy, said that the supply to Zoox "represents a pivotal step for Panasonic Energy, with the opportunity to contribute towards the next generation of mobility innovation."
