Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser will leave her office when her current term expires, she said Tuesday.

"With a grateful heart, I am announcing that I will not seek a fourth term," Bowser, a Democrat, said in a post on X. Bowser, 53 years old, has served as the district's mayor for roughly a decade.

President Trump deployed National Guard troops in the district in August over her objections. The mission was dubbed Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful.

A federal judge ruled last week that deployment was unlawful, which Bowser hailed as a move "in the right direction."

Trump also took command in August of Washington, D.C.'s local police force, known as the Metropolitan Police Department.

While Bowser criticized having the National Guard policing Americans on U.S. soil and warned the deployment was a slippery slope that could "interfere with the very nature of American democracy," she also said she appreciated the resulting crime reduction, including an 87% drop in carjackings.

"We know that when carjackings go down, when use of guns go down, when homicides or robberies go down, neighborhoods feel safer and are safer," Bowser said in late August. "So this surge has been important to us for that reason."
