Apple has named Amar Subramanya as its new vice president of AI.

Subramanya will report to Apple's senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi. He will lead Apple's foundation models, machine learning research and AI safety and evaluation, the tech company said Monday.

Subramanya most recently served as corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft. Before that, he spent 16 years at Google, where he led engineering on Google's Gemini Assistant.

Subramanya joins as John Giannandrea is stepping down as senior vice president for machine learning and AI strategy. He will serve as an adviser before retiring in the spring of 2026.

Giannandrea has worked at Apple since 2018, where he played a key role in AI and machine learning strategy. His team is currently responsible for Apple foundation models, search and knowledge, machine learning research and AI infrastructure.

The balance of Giannandrea's organization will shift to Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue to align more closely with similar organizations, Apple said.
