Hiring Confidence Slips in Canada Entering 2026 -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

1647 ET - Hiring intentions in Canada deteriorate entering 2026, says a survey from ManpowerGroup. The employment-services firm says that, based on a survey of Canadian employers, its benchmark gauge of hiring fell to 18%, down 3 percentage points from the previous quarter and a drop of 10 points from a year ago. "Confidence is cooling as economic uncertainty lingers," ManpowerGroup says. The firm says larger organizations, or those with over 1,000 employees, are the least optimistic on hiring plans. The results emerge as economists debate the strength of Canada's labor market. The closely watched labor-force survey from Statistics Canada indicates a sharp decline in the unemployment rate and strong hiring over the past three months. However, the less-timely payroll report points to tepid employment growth up until September. (paul.vieira@wsj.com; @paulvieira)
