BAE Systems has received a $16 million contract from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to work on the second phase of the Oversight program.

The British aerospace and defense company has already completed the first phase of the program, designed to build an autonomous system to monitor terrestrial assets using satellite constellations. The second phase will entail improving the system's algorithms for larger and more complex scenarios, the company said Wednesday.

"Future mission requirements are pushing capabilities to the tactical edge," BAE Systems Senior Principal Scientist Ben Cooper said. "In space, this means operating primarily on-board satellites. Through this program, we will help make the space domain more tactically relevant for warfighters."

Work on the system will take place in Burlington, Mass. and Merrimack, N.H. in collaboration with subcontractor AIMdyn, the company said.
