Rep. Dan Newhouse, one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach President Trump in 2021, said he won't run for reelection next year in his conservative Washington district.

"This decision comes with no reservation or remorse, only gratitude," he said in a statement.

Newhouse, 70 years old, is one of just two House Republicans who voted against Trump who remain in office. Of the original 10, four including Rep. Liz Cheney (R., Wyo.) lost to Trump-endorsed opponents in 2022 and four decided to retire. Only Newhouse and Rep. David Valadao of California are still in the House.

Trump was impeached by the Democratic-led House in early 2021 over his actions related to the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, in which Trump supporters stormed the building. He was then acquitted in the Senate, where a two-thirds supermajority is required to convict.

Trump targeted Newhouse in the congressman's 2024 reelection bid, backing his opponent and labeling the incumbent a "weak and pathetic RINO ...who voted to, for no reason, impeach me." But Newhouse won reelection by about six percentage points over fellow Republican Jerrod Sessler. Sessler, who said he was at the Capitol on the day of the riot but didn't participate in the violence, is running again for the seat.

In his statement at the time, Newhouse said that a vote against impeachment would be "a vote to validate the unacceptable violence we witnessed in our nation's capital. It is also a vote to condone President Trump's inaction. ... Our country needed a leader, and President Trump failed to fulfill his oath of office."

Valadao, who represents a competitive Bakersfield-area seat that Democrats are hoping to flip back to their column, has filed to run for reelection in 2026.
