Shares of energy companies rose as the U.S. blockaded Venezuela's tankers bearing sanctioned oil.
New York-traded oil futures settled up 1.2% at $55.94 a barrel, though gains were limited by expectations of a global glut.
Natural-gas futures snapped a four-session losing streak.
