Longtime Russell Investments chairman George F. Russell Jr. died near his hometown of Tacoma, Wash., on Dec. 18, a spokeswoman said. He was 93.

Russell was known for helping pioneer the pension consulting business and overseeing the launch of the widely-tracked Russell 2000 small cap index.

In 1958 he joined a small company his grandfather had founded and oversaw decades of expansion, serving as chairman until 1999, according to the spokeswoman.

Pensions & Investments named Russell one of the four most influential people in institutional investing in 1993, alongside Warren Buffett.
