President Donald Trump, at a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Palm Beach, Fla., Monday, said he's looking at announcing a replacement for Fed Chair Jerome Powell in January.

President Donald Trump on Monday said he's looking at next month for the announcement of a candidate to replace Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and revived a threat to sue over renovations at the central bank's headquarters.

"January, sometime," Trump said in response to a question about timing for his pick for a new leader of the Fed. The president and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were meeting at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, and the remarks came at a news conference.

Trump has been considering candidates for Fed chair that include White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett and former Fed governor Kevin Warsh to succeed Powell, whose term as chair ends in May. The president has consistently criticized Powell over monetary policy.

Trump has since last summer threatened a lawsuit against Powell related to renovations at the Fed's Washington, D.C., headquarters, and he reiterated that threat Monday. It came as the president is defending the costs of his own White House ballroom project.
