U.S. Natural Gas Edges Up in Early Trade -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
01/12

0910 ET - U.S. natural gas futures are a little higher after last week's heavy losses, with the market looking for colder weather to lift heating demand. Inventories are currently 1% above the five-year average, and the supply overhang could increase appreciably unless there's a major cold spell in the last week of this month, Ritterbusch and Associates says in a note. One of the few bullish considerations "is simply the fact that the speculative entities remain heavily positioned on the short side of this market to the extent that even a minor shift toward sustainably colder temps will be seeing a much-exaggerated price response," the firm adds. Nymex natural gas is up 1.2% at $3.207/mmBtu. (anthony.harrup@wsj.com)
