AdvertisementFirst Busey's Earnings Will Easily Cover The Distributions  Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained.   Having distributed dividends for at least 10 years, First Busey has a long history of paying out a part of its earnings to shareholders.   Based on First Busey's last earnings report, the payout ratio is at a decent 77%, meaning that the company is able to pay out its dividend with a bit of room to spare.     Over the next 3 years, EPS is forecast to expand by 151.7%.   Analyst estimates also show the future payout ratio being 40% in the same 3 years which brings it into quite a comfortable range. Since 2016, the annual payment back then was $0.60, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $1.00.      This means that it has been growing its distributions at 5.2% per annum over that time.     Dividends have grown at a reasonable rate over this period, and without any major cuts in the payment over time, we think this is an attractive combination as it provides a nice boost to shareholder returns.     Dividend Growth Is Doubtful  The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time.   However, initial appearances might be deceiving.      First Busey has seen earnings per share falling at 9.7% per year over the last five years.  If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth.   Earnings are predicted to grow over the next year, but we would remain cautious until a track record of earnings growth is established.      We should note that First Busey has issued stock equal to 55% of shares outstanding.  Trying to grow the dividend when issuing new shares reminds us of the ancient Greek tale of Sisyphus - perpetually pushing a boulder uphill. Companies that consistently issue new shares are often suboptimal from a dividend perspective.  Our Thoughts On First Busey's Dividend  In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think First Busey's payments are rock solid.       Although they have been consistent in the past, we think the payments are a little high to be sustained.      We don't think First Busey is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.   Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.  Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
