European Reinsurers Could Face Tougher Market for Years -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

1620 GMT - European reinsurers are confronting tougher market conditions, which could weigh on their earnings for years to come, Keefe, Bruyette & Woods's Darius Satkauskas says in a research note. "The market could continue softening for many years, posing risks to full European reinsurers' earnings multiples and to overly optimistic consensus earnings estimates," the analyst says. The industry is heading into a so-called soft market--a period of falling prices--and current consensus earnings estimates leave little room for prolonged pressures, the analyst says. KBW cuts its recommendation on Swiss Re to underperform from market perform, lowering its target price to 120 Swiss francs from 140 francs. Swiss Re falls 0.8% to 126.90 francs. French peer Scor drops 0.7%, and Germany's Munich Re and Hannover Re are up 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively. (adria.calatayud@wsj.com)
