DAVOS: NATO Failing to Ramp Up Arms Production Fast Enough, Chief Says -- Market Talk

1042 GMT - Europe and the U.S. aren't ramping up their defense production as fast as it is needed, Mark Rutte, the secretary-general of NATO, tells the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. "We are not nearly producing enough. The fact that Poland, which is the closest ally to the U.S. that you can find, is buying its arms from [South] Korea is because it cannot buy enough in the U.S. or from the Europeans," he says. "This is true for the whole of NATO territory." NATO must also prepare its other industries, including the automotive sector, for a potential situation where their support is needed, Rutte adds. "Russia is on a war economy footing," he stresses. "We really have to be watchful." (cristina.gallardo@wsj.com)
