STOCKHOLM--Swedish steelmaker SSAB signed a letter of intent with Rheinmetall to supply the German defense and technology company with fossil-fuel-free steel.

With the deal, Rheinmetall becomes the first defense equipment manufacturer to adopt decarbonized steel in its production, SSAB said Thursday.

The collaboration will begin with deliveries of SSAB's zero product, with volumes increasing over time. Future deliveries will also include SSAB fossil-fuel-free steel. No financial details were disclosed.

SSAB's so-called fossil-free steel replaces the coking coal traditionally used for iron ore-based steelmaking with electricity from renewable sources and hydrogen. Its zero product uses recycled steel and fossil-free energy, which enables it to produce steel with virtually zero fossil carbon emissions.
