DAVOS, Switzerland -- Hitachi Ltd. needs to adapt to changes in the business environment amid rising tensions between the United States and Europe, the Japanese conglomerate's president and CEO, Toshiaki Tokunaga, told reporters on Wednesday. He made the comments at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting.

"We must change the form of our corporate activities significantly to suit (changes) in the business environment," Tokunaga said.

Geopolitical risks have increased rapidly recently, with the United States showing renewed interest in acquiring the Danish territory of Greenland and the European Union stressing its opposition.

Hitachi operates in various parts of the world. "We have meticulously built supply chains in each region," Tokunaga said. "We will continue doing so, and turn changes (in the business environment) into opportunities."

Meanwhile, Tokunaga expressed concern about the yen's depreciation. "Having stable exchange rates is extremely important," he said. "The yen's excessive depreciation will impose restrictions on business activities."
