Bank of Montreal will replace its Air Miles program with Blue Rewards, while Shell Canada plans to join the Scene+ network, marking two major shifts in how Canadians will earn and use loyalty points.

The Canadian bank said that it will transition its Air Miles rewards program to Blue Rewards starting this summer to offer greater flexibility, benefits, and expanded partnerships, as well as ways for members to gain more points.

At the same time, Shell Canada is joining the Scene+ network, co-owned by Bank of Nova Scotia, Cineplex and Canadian grocer Empire, which will give the program's 15 million members points to earn and redeem on fuel, car washes and convenience purchases at hundreds of locations nationwide by May 26.

There have been a spate of Canadian loyalty program moves in recent weeks, including a new partnership between Royal Bank of Canada and Canadian Tire that gives RBC cardholders extra rewards at the retailer's stores, while Air Transat announced a new program with Desjardins and Visa that will include co-branded credit cards and travel perks.
