Airlines have largely recovered from winter storm Fern's snow and ice, but American Airlines continues to struggle.

As of midafternoon, more than 950 American flights scheduled for Tuesday have been scrapped. That represents nearly a third of its daily schedule, and nearly half of all canceled flights into or out of U.S. airports, according to flight-data provider FlightAware. Regional carrier PSA Airlines, which operates American-branded flights, has shed over a quarter of its schedule.

CEO Robert Isom told analysts on Tuesday morning that five of American's nine largest operations were hit by the storm and that cancellations are expected to remain elevated for two more days. Conditions at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, American's largest hub, are "still a skating rink," said Isom, who apologized to customers.

More than 500 flights leaving DFW have been canceled, including 426 American flights. About 15 miles away at Dallas Love Field, Southwest's core hub, only one flight has been canceled, according to FlightAware.

Delta has canceled fewer than 100 flights, or about 3% of its Tuesday schedule. For United and Southwest, it's less than 1% of their total departures.
