** Shares of Rio Tinto RIO.AX rise as much as 2.6% to their record high level of A$161.25

** Stock among top gainers on the benchmark index .AXJO, which is down 1.6%

** Rio Tinto on Thursday said it was no longer in talks with Glencore GLEN.L about a takeover that would have created the world's largest mining company

** The world's largest producer of iron ore said the two companies couldn't strike a deal that delivered sufficient value to shareholders

** YTD, stock up 7.8%, including the day's moves
