Kirin Holdings has agreed to sell Kentucky-based bourbon whiskey unit Four Roses Distillery to E. & J. Gallo Winery in a $775 million deal.

The Japanese beer and beverage maker said Friday that it decided to sell the bourbon maker as part of a regular review of its business portfolio.

Kirin said Four Roses had achieved strong growth, primarily in the U.S. market, since its acquisition in 2002.

The acquirer, E. & J. Gallo Winery, is a California-based family-owned alcoholic beverage producer.

The Japanese company didn't disclose the bourbon maker's financial condition, citing confidentiality obligations between the parties.

Kirin said the sale price of up to about $775 million included a $50 million consideration contingent upon Four Roses achieving certain revenue targets following the completion of the sale.

The sale is expected to be completed in the second quarter, Kirin said.
