Uber Technologies (UBER) is preparing to implement stricter background checks for its drivers to bar individuals convicted of violent felonies, sexual offenses, and child or elder abuse, regardless of when those crimes occurred, The New York Times said Thursday, citing people briefed on the matter.

The ride-hailing company is also considering changing its policies on offenses such as harassment, restraining order violations, and weapons charges, which are currently allowed if convictions are over seven years old, according to the report. It was not clear when and how the changes will be implemented, the report said.

Uber Technologies did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
