Norwegian Cruise Has Slipped Behind Rivals -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
02/18

1308 ET - Norwegian Cruise Line is getting interest from activist investors as it falls behind rivals in terms of specialty offerings, Truist analysts say. The cruise line hasn't opened a private island -- though it plans to do so this summer -- while Royal Caribbean is already planning to open its second island next year and Carnival opened one last summer, the analysts note. Private-island stops have become an important sales driver for cruises, typically bringing a 20% ticket pricing premium compared with cruise itineraries without island stops, the analysts say. Norwegian also lacks a competing product to Royal Caribbean's mega-ships, which have proven extremely popular among customers, the analysts say. (katherine.hamilton@wsj.com)
