Data Centers Seen Competing for Prime Farm Land -- Market Talk

0944 ET - Rural land is a prime location for companies seeking to build new data centers to run AI operations, and towns are increasingly selling prime farm land to these companies, says Danny Munch of American Farm Bureau Federation. "Agriculture is on the front lines when looking at an attractive place to place these data centers," Munch tells attendees of the USDA's Agricultural Outlook Forum. "The revenue generation in these areas is high while investment from the town is quite low." Not only do these huge data centers take up a lot of acres that could be used by farmers in these communities, but their usage of resources like water and electricity also drives up costs for farmers.
