Just a few weeks after it started testing airport pickups, Airbnb has hired a former Uber executive to lead its global operations.

The short-term rental company has ambitions to become a one-stop shop for travel. Last year, it relaunched its experiences business and also started services in which people can book massages or personal chefs. The plans to start testing private airport transfers outside of North America are part of the strategy.

Now it has appointed 12-year Uber veteran Gus Fuldner as Airbnb's new head of its operations. As senior vice president of core services at Uber, Fuldner led teams in safety, support and payments. He also developed Uber's first insurance models for ridesharing.

Airbnb didn't draw a direct connection between airport pickups and Fuldner's hiring. In a memo to staff Tuesday morning, Chief Executive Brian Chesky said: "I've asked Gus to be our chief problem solver. His mandate is to take on Airbnb's hardest challenges and help make this one of the best-run companies in tech."

Fuldner will oversee Airbnb's community support, fraud and safety operations, and AirCover, which is the company's insurance program. He succeeds Tara Bunch, who is retiring after six years at the company.
