Middle East Conflict Likely to Be Short-Term Event -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

0804 GMT - The continuing Middle East conflict is likely to be a short-term rather than a long-term event, BNP Paribas' William Bratton writes in a note. "But we caveat our view with the acceptance that events continue to move fast and in a somewhat unpredictable manner," he says. Market sentiment is being driven by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. BNP Paribas reckons that the Trump administration will be sensitive to persistently higher energy prices and reluctant to see such levels over the longer term. However, if tensions persist, China is relatively attractive compared with the rest of the region, BNP Paribas says. This is due to China's domestically orientated economy, including its energy supplies. (amanda.lee@wsj.com)
