Dollar Tree Attracts New Customers as Discretionary Outperforms -- Market Talk

0900 ET - Inflation-weary shoppers flocked to Dollar Tree for Christmas decorations, party supplies and toys over the holiday season. The discount-retailer says discretionary categories outperformed during the recent quarter. CEO Mike Creedon says on a call with analysts that he views the outperformance as "an indicator of customer receptivity to expanded value, with shoppers gravitating toward broader assortments and higher value options." Dollar Tree also added 6.5 million net new households during 4Q, representing a meaningful acceleration from a quarter earlier. Both trends point to stronger engagement, Creedon says. "If engagement were deteriorating, we would expect to see pressure first in discretionary and impulse categories," he says. "Instead, discretionary outperformed, seasonal was strong and multi-price adoption increased." (connor.hart@wsj.com)
