Insurance Australia Group (ASX:IAG) said that NRMA Insurance data shows the escalating toll of extreme weather across Australia, with nearly 300,000 wild weather claims lodged in the past five years, according to a Tuesday statement.

NRMA Insurance Wild Weather Tracker reveals that wild weather accounts for 57% of all home claims, and 46% of Australians say they are more concerned about weather damaging their home than they were five years ago.

"Warm, dry conditions and elevated bushfire risk are likely to persist across parts of southern Australia, including New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. While northern regions of Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia may stay wetter than usual with a higher chance of tropical systems and severe storms," said NRMA Insurance Meteorologist Peter Chan.

According to the statement, 38% of Australians say they are now more likely to take steps to prepare for wild weather in the future following the events of the past five years, which reflects a preparedness movement, with 42% having an emergency plan in place compared to 36% five years ago.

The company's shares fell 2% in recent Tuesday trade.
