SYDNEY--Australian energy costs rose more over the past week with diesel prices outstripping those of regular fuels, while the country's watchdog again voiced concern about supply in areas including city suburbs and regional towns.

Across Australia's five largest cities, daily average retail diesel prices on March 25 were 303.5 Australian cents per liter, equivalent to 209 U.S. cents. That represented an increase of 10% from the previous week.

Average retail prices for regular unleaded gasoline were up 8% from the previous week.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission said the domestic fuel-price increases followed rises in international benchmark prices as hostilities continued in the Middle East.

The report showed the international benchmark price of diesel increased by about 17% from the previous week, whereas the benchmark price for refined fuels increased by about 9%.

"We remain concerned about supply issues for both petrol and diesel impacting a range of locations, including capital city suburbs, regional towns and remote areas," said Mick Keogh, deputy chair of the ACCC.
