Earnings season will kick into high gear as nearly 20% of the S&P 500 is scheduled to report their quarterly earnings. Big names reporting include Tesla, Boeing and Intel. Investors will also watch the scheduled testimony of Kevin Warsh, President Trump's nominee for Federal Reserve chair, for signals on how he'd lead the central bank. Friday's consumer-sentiment figures will confirm whether April's preliminary reading will remain the index's lowest on record.

Tuesday, April 21
-- Hearings: Warsh is due to testify before the Senate Banking Committee.
-- Earnings: UnitedHealth, GE Aerospace, Northrop Grumman, United Airlines, Capital One, RTX, Halliburton, 3M
-- Economic data: U.S. retail sales for March will be published by the Commerce Department, and the Census Bureau is due to release February's manufacturing and trade inventories and sales estimates. The National Association of Realtors will publish its pending home sales data for March.
-- Fed speeches: Fed governor Christopher Waller is scheduled to discuss modernizing reserve bank operations at a Brookings event at 2:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 22
-- Economic data: The United Kingdom will report its consumer-price index and producer-price index readings for March. The Energy Information Administration releases its weekly report on petroleum. The Mortgage Bankers Association publishes data on mortgage applications.
-- Earnings: Tesla, Boeing, Southwest Airlines, AT&T, IBM, ServiceNow, GE Vernova, Philip Morris, CME Group, Moody's
Thursday, April 23
-- Economic data: Initial jobless claims. Purchasing managers' data for April will be released for the U.S. and other countries. The EIA releases its weekly report on natural gas storage. The Kansas City Fed will publish its monthly manufacturing index for April.
-- Earnings: American Express, Intel, Blackstone, Comcast, Keurig Dr Pepper, American Airlines, Lockheed Martin, Thermo Fisher, Honeywell, PG&E, Dow Inc., Nasdaq Inc., Union Pacific
Friday, April 24
Economic data: The University of Michigan will release its final consumer sentiment figures for April at 10 a.m.
Earnings: Procter & Gamble, Norfolk Southern, HCA Healthcare
