XPO's first-quarter net income rose as the trucking line's efficiency compensated for anemic growth in volume by weight.

The Greenwich, Conn., logistics and less-than-truckload freight firm posted earnings of $101 million, or 85 cents a share, up from $69 million, or 58 cents a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out certain one-off items, XPO logged adjusted earnings of $1.01 a share, handily beating the mean analyst estimate of 88 cents a share.

Revenue rose 7.3% to $2.1 billion, topping the average Wall Street target of $2.04 billion.

Revenue from less-than-truckload shipping in North America rose 4.9% to $1.23 billion, while European transportation revenue rose 11% to $868 million.

In North America, shipments per day increased 3%, while tonnage per day edged up 0.1%.

The company said it enhanced productivity and efficiency by using artificial-intelligence technology.
