Aflac 1Q Profit Rises as Revenue Climbs on U.S. Growth

Aflac logged higher profit as revenue climbed in its latest quarter, helped by growth in the U.S.

The insurance company posted a first-quarter profit of $1.02 billion, or $1.98 a share, compared with $29 million, or 5 cents a share, a year earlier.

Adjusted earnings per share were $1.75, compared with estimates of $1.79 a share, according to analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue climbed 28% to $4.35 billion, compared with analyst estimates of $4.2 billion.

Aflac U.S. net earned premiums increased 3.5% to $1.56 billion during the quarter, while net earned premiums decreased 6.4% in Japan to $1.57 billion.

In the U.S., adjusted revenue rose 3.4% to $1.78 billion, while the metric fell 4.4% to $2.17 billion in Japan.

Chief Executive Officer Daniel Amos said the company has attracted new business through its medical insurance, cancer insurance and life insurance products in Japan, as well as group voluntary benefits, network dental and vision, and group life and disability in the U.S.
