Gildan Activewear reported a first-quarter loss even as sales rose, lifted by contributions from the company's recently acquired HanesBrands business.

The apparel manufacturer on Thursday posted a net loss of $65.8 million, or 36 cents a share compared with a profit of $84.7 million, or 56 cents a share, in the comparable quarter a year ago.

Adjusted earnings were 43 cents a share. According to FactSet, analysts were expecting adjusted earnings of 35 cents a share.

Net sales rose to $1.17 billion from $711.7 million, topping targets of $1.14 billion.

Gildan Activewear said that the increase includes the contribution of HanesBrands as it looks to capture synergies of the combination.

The company reiterated its expectations of $6 billion to $6.2 billion in revenue for the year, as well as adjusted earnings of $4.20 to $4.40 a share.
