Ballard Power Systems' loss narrowed in the first quarter as stronger contributions from its rail and stationary segments offset weaker results in its bus business.

The hydrogen fuel-cell technology company posted a net loss from continuing operations of $11.4 million, or 4 cents a share, narrowing from a loss of $21 million, or 7 cents a share, in the comparable quarter a year ago.

According to FactSet, analysts were expecting the loss to narrow more moderately to 6 cents a share.

Revenue rose 26% to $19.4 million, just shy of analyst forecasts of $20.3 million. Of its segments, bus, its largest, saw a 46% decline in revenue to $6.8 million. Rail revenue rose to $5.2 million from $100,000 and stationary advanced to $5.2 million from $600,000.

Ballard cited higher shipments in the period.

The company ended the quarter with an order backlog of $112.9 million, 5% lower than the end of the previous quarter, while the 12-month order book was $52.8 million.
