Match Group 1Q Profit, Revenue Rise as Tinder Turnaround Continues

Match Group logged higher profit and revenue in its latest quarter as efforts to turn around Tinder, its biggest dating app, boosted results alongside continued growth at Hinge.

Match said product changes at Tinder are resonating with Gen Z, helping the app's revenue tick up 2% after several quarters of declines. The app's growth was driven by an increase in revenue per paying user, partially offset by a continued decline in paying users.

The improvement at Tinder comes as Match looks to turnaround the app with new product features like a double date tool and an improved recommendations algorithm. The company has also been working to reset the platform with trust and safety improvements, including the rollout of Face Check, a feature that requires new users to complete a scan of their face before swiping.

"Simply put, Tinder works better now," Chief Executive Spencer Rascoff said. "We are not at the finish line, but the turnaround is clearly underway."

Hinge, meanwhile, continued to post double-digit growth, with revenue up 28% year-over-year as paying users, and revenue per paying user, both climbed.

Those trends helped Match's overall profit and revenue rise, and top Wall Street's estimates. The company expects revenue to be down 2% to flat in the current quarter, however, with the midpoint of its outlook coming in shy of analysts' expectations.

First-quarter profit came in at $166.8 million, or 68 cents a share, up from $117.6 million, or 44 cents a share, a year earlier. Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of 61 cents a share.

Revenue rose 4% year-over-year to $863.9 million, topping analyst estimates of $854.7 million.

For the current second quarter, the company expects revenue of $850 to $860 million. Analysts were looking for $856.2 million.

The results and guidance come after Match last week disclosed a $100 million investment in Sniffies, taking what it described as a significant minority stake in the map-based hookup website that caters to non-heterosexual men. Match said it has an option to acquire Sniffies' remaining equity in the future, and the company will continue to run independently.
