Shares of Kestrel Group declined after the company recorded a wider loss in its latest quarter as expenses rose.

The stock retreated 7.5% to $10.98 in after-hours trading on Friday. Through the market close shares are up 16% this year.

The specialty insurance company posted a first-quarter loss of $7.4 million, or 96 cents a share, compared with a loss of $394,000, or 14 cents a share, a year earlier. The wider loss was driven by higher expenses, including an increase in general and administrative expenses.

Revenue rose to $10.2 million from $841,000.

Gross premiums written came in at $2.7 million. Net premiums earned were $3.2 million.

Chief Executive Luke Ledbetter said the company had continued momentum in the quarter in its program services segment, which provides fronting services to general agents and insurance carriers. The segment's fee revenue and premiums produced rose materially year-over-year, he said.
