Oklo's loss roughly tripled in the first quarter, as it spends more on deploying its nuclear reactor site after clearing a key regulatory hurdle.

The nuclear-energy company on Tuesday posted a loss of $33.1 million, or 19 cents a share, in the quarter ended March 31, compared with $9.8 million, or 7 cents a share, a year earlier.

Analysts expected a loss of 20 cents a share, according to FactSet.

Oklo is designing a small modular reactor and hasn't yet recorded any revenue. The company said in March that the Energy Department approved the design and operation of its first reactor, a key regulatory win for Oklo.

While investors wait to see sales come in, they are generally more focused on how much the company is spending.

Oklo spent $32.8 million on deployment of its planned facilities in the quarter. Analysts were anticipating capital expenditures of $29.8 million, per FactSet.

The deployment costs, along with increased buying of debt securities and offset from proceeds from redemptions, resulted in an increase of net cash used in investing activities, Oklo said. Net cash used for investing was $359 million in the quarter, compared with $6.1 million the year before.
