Canadian Solar elevated Colin Parkin to chief executive as founder Shawn Qu shifts to become executive chairman and chief technology officer.

Qu, who founded the solar technology and renewable energy company in Mississauga, Ontario, 25 years ago, will transition from his role as chairman and CEO. Parkin had previously served as president.

The company said Qu in his new role will focus on spearheading technological innovation and long-term research and development strategy.

Canadian Solar's net loss narrowed to $32.1 million, or 71 cents a share, in the first quarter from $34 million, or 69 cents, a year earlier.

Revenue fell 9.9% on last year to $1.08 billion.

The company said solar module shipments that were recognized as revenue in the first quarter totaled 2.5 gigawatts, down 42% quarter-over-quarter and 64% below a year earlier. Battery energy storage shipments recognized as revenue totaled 2.1 gigawatt-hours, up 5% on the prior quarter and 142% higher than the same period last year.
