Biogen, Denali Say Parkinson's Drug Didn't Meet Trial Endpoints -- Update

A drug being developed by Biogen and Denali Therapeutics to treat Parkinson's didn't slow down progression of the disease in a recent trial.

The drug companies said Thursday they are discontinuing further development of BIIB122 in idiopathic Parkinson's disease based on the results.

Denali shares retreated 7% to $18, while Biogen's stock declined 1% to $187.49.

BIIB122, which is in a Phase 2b trial to treat early-stage Parkinson's, failed to meet its primary or secondary endpoints in the study.

The trial involved 648 participants from ages 30 to 80 with early-stage Parkinson's. They received treatment for at least 48 weeks and up to 144 weeks.

BIIB122 was an investigational small molecule inhibitor of LRRK2, a gene that has been linked to Parkinson's.

Denali will continue to conduct a Phase 2a study evaluating the small molecular inhibitor in carriers of a pathogenic LRRK2 variant.
