Power chip stocks surged Tuesday after Vicor unexpectedly raised its second-quarter revenue guidance in yet another positive signal for the industry.

Vicor boosted its second-quarter revenue guidance to $142 million from $126 million, citing higher product revenue and additional royalties from an undisclosed new licensee. The license includes all of Vicor's patented power-system technology, the company said.

Vicor stock jumped 9.7% in premarket trading. Shares have risen 145% this year as artificial intelligence has boosted demand for chips to manage and distribute power within data-center infrastructure.

Other power chip stocks also were on the rise. Wolfspeed jumped 10%, Navitas Semiconductor rose 8.6%, and Monolithic Power Systems was up 2.7%.

Vicor's royalty revenue totaled $15 million in the first quarter, and analysts had expected it to rise slightly to $16 million in the second quarter, according to FactSet. The new licensee shows the promise of the royalties business, which remains much smaller than Vicor's standard product sales.

"An all-inclusive license enables [original equipment manufacturers] and hyper-scalers to secure multi-source access to all of the power system innovations pioneered and patented by Vicor," CEO Patrizio Vinciarelli said in a statement.
