GLP-1 Drugs Expected to Pose Headwind to Restaurants -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
05/27

1317 ET - GLP-1 drugs have only modestly affected restaurant sales and traffic so far, but could come to have a larger impact on the industry, both as a headwind to traffic and a catalyst for changing menus, UBS analysts write, citing results from their U.S. GLP-1 survey. Among GLP-1 users in their survey, 61% of respondents have cut their caloric intake, while 37% are dining out less and roughly half are eating healthier foods. "While still in the early stages, we believe increasing usage of GLP-1 drugs could represent a sales headwind for many restaurant brands, including QSRs and those that are considered less healthy," the analysts write. "Changes in eating behavior could also increase menu shifts towards healthier and smaller-portioned menu options." (elias.schisgall@wsj.com)
