Market Chatter: Meta Platforms' Appeal to Avoid Vermont Lawsuit Rejected by Supreme Court

A bid by Meta Platforms (META) to avoid a lawsuit by Vermont's attorney general accusing the company of designing the Instagram social media app to be addictive to young users was rejected by the US Supreme Court, Reuters reported Tuesday.

The court turned down Meta's appeal of a lower court ruling to let the lawsuit proceed, rejecting the company's argument that Vermont courts lack jurisdiction over the issue, according to the report.

Vermont Attorney General Charity Clark had sued Meta in 2023 in state court under the state's consumer protection law, claiming that Instagram has harmed teens' mental health. Meta sought to have the case dismissed, and the Vermont Supreme Court rejected the company's appeal in 2025, the report said.

Meta did not immediately reply to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
