Salesforce agreed to acquire m3ter, a platform built to support consumption-based monetization, in a bid to help customers update their business models in response to artificial intelligence.

Enterprise-software company Salesforce said m3ter would support customers' usage- and outcome-based pricing models through Agentforce Revenue Management. Software companies have increasingly shifted to usage-based models rather than subscriptions amid the growth of AI "agents" interacting with business software.

Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

"Every company is looking for more flexibility in how they monetize their products, especially as AI shifts the landscape from traditional subscriptions to consumption-based models," Meredith Schmidt, the general manager of Agentforce Revenue Management, said.

"With m3ter, Salesforce will offer native consumption billing alongside our existing models, giving our customers more choice in how they grow their revenue without ever leaving the Salesforce platform," she added.

The deal is expected to close in the second quarter.
