Meta Platforms (META), Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google and other technology companies could face new restrictions after the UK government said Monday it plans to ban social media platforms from offering services to users under 16.

Modeled on Australia's framework, the proposal would cover platforms including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok and X, while exempting messaging services such as WhatsApp and Signal, with the rules expected to take effect in spring 2027.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the move would "give kids their childhood back," while Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said the government was acting after tech companies failed to adequately protect children online.

The government also proposed broader safeguards, including curbs on livestreaming and interactions with strangers for minors, while limiting sexually themed AI chatbot functions to adults.

Meta Platforms, Google did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
