Walmart has signed a deal to buy nuclear power from Constellation Energy starting later this decade.

The companies said Tuesday the purchase agreement provides Walmart with about 176 megawatts of wholesale supply, including 30 megawatts of expanded generating capacity, in two 15-year terms starting in 2029 and 2030.

The deal should provide enough new power to the grid to support Walmart's high-tech perishable distribution center that's being developed in Belvidere, Ill. The energy will be generated at Constellation's Dresden Clean Energy Center in Illinois.

Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

This is Walmart's first nuclear power purchase agreement and among the first of its kind between a large retailer and a U.S. nuclear energy facility, the companies said.

"Working with Constellation allows us to support new operations in Illinois while advancing our strategy in a way that prioritizes affordable, reliable, and clean energy for our business and the communities we serve," said Shayne Wahlmeier, the senior vice president of energy at Walmart U.S.
