Virgin Australia (ASX:VGN) is offering eligible holders of domestic Economy Flex tickets the ability to switch to an available earlier same-day flight at no additional cost, the airline said Thursday.

The move, which the company described as a first for Australian airlines, comes amid a backdrop of high inflation and will help travelers avoid flight change costs.

The option is available through the company's app and was first launched for high-tier Velocity frequent flyer members in May.

Virgin Australia shares were down nearly 1% in recent Thursday trade.
