Thomson Reuters plans to eliminate up to 500 jobs globally in engineering, as the company expands its use of artificial intelligence, Reuters reported Monday, citing an employee who attended a staff meeting.

That represents about 1.8% of its overall workforce of roughly 27,100 and 5.2% of the 9,400 employees in its operations and technology unit, based on Reuters calculations.

The company confirmed it is cutting "a small number of roles" in engineering, according to the report.

A Thomson Reuters spokesperson said the company is focusing capacity where it matters most to customers and expects to hire more than 250 net-new engineering roles globally over the next two years, mostly senior and AI-native positions, Reuters reported.

Reuters did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
