Abbott Laboratories 2Q Sales Rise on Diagnostics Growth

Abbott Laboratories had higher revenue in the second quarter, boosted by more sales in its diagnostics business.

The healthcare company on Thursday said its profit fell to $928 million, or 53 cents a share, in the quarter ended June 30, from $1.78 billion, or $1.01 a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out certain one-time items, adjusted per-share earnings were $1.31, ahead of the $1.28 anticipated by analysts, according to FactSet.

Revenue rose 13% to $12.59 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet forecast revenue of $12.52 billion. Comparable sales growth was 4.8%.

Sales in Abbott's diagnostics business jumped 42%. The segment was boosted in part by mid-teens growth of the cancer test Cologuard, which is benefiting from a growing base of new and repeated customers.

Medical devices sales rose 9% and established pharmaceuticals sales rose more than 8%. Revenue in the nutrition segment fell 3.1% due to lower sales volumes and the effect of recent pricing actions.

Abbott raised its outlook for full-year adjusted earnings per share to $5.45 to $5.60, up from a previous range of $5.38 to $5.58. It reaffirmed its guidance for comparable sales growth of 6.5% to 7.5%.
